What is your prefer granulation powder to use in your Cal.50 with a 1:48 twist rate. Do you prefer 2FFg or 3FFFg ? I have a new to me TC Renegade and asking my self where to start. I will shoot .490 PRB. Any comments and info will be appreciate ! Thanks

Yep, me too pretty much. I will sometimes use 2f if I'm using a maxi ball, but not with prb.

:hatsoff:

With the experience my dad has had with his renegade those guns shoot almost any substitute powder and black 2f or 3f fine with no misfires or hang fires. I'd go with 3f since it burns off a little bit cleaner and has better velocities.

congrats on your new Renegade... i've mine since about when the Earth cooled, and it's seen a lot of use and it no longer 'pretty,' but still put lead on target when called upon to do so.

Mine is a flint, also .50 cal, and i've tried both FFg and FFFg (since i shoot flint, real BP is a necessity). Had better results with FFFg, but the distance between the two was not a 'train stopper.'

I would recommend that you get a pound of each and see what works best in your particular rifle. Each rifle will have its own likes and dislikes, and you don't know what they are until you try things out. That's part of the fun.

Additionally, if you don't already, get Dutch Schoultz' monograph. It's really money very well spent; helped my shooting a bunch.

Best of luck- make good smoke!

.490 Hornady ball, .018 pillow ticking patch and 3Fg Goex powder will win competitions or bring home the venison!

My .50 1:48 rifle screamed bloody hell every time I tried 3F in it. It only eats 2F.

I use FFFg in my .62 Hawkens. Back off your powder charge about 15% from FFg. If you use Swiss, back off another 10%. Start off at about 60 gr. gr. FFFg and work up in 5 gr. increments to find your rifle's sweet spot. Try pillow ticking or denim for patching. .24" denim worked best in my T/C.

I shoot Lee mold REAL slugs in my .50 1-48. 2F stout charges give tighter groups then 3F.
I drop some 3F first to speed ignition.

I use 3fff up to 50 then use 2ff for 50&54. I use 50 or 54 for deer and use 80grs for PRB and 110grs for Maxis. Works for me. The way to tell what your gun likes is shot at 50yrds,then move back 50yrds more and see how much it drops using loads of each powder. Remember 3fff will have more breech pressure, have to load less of it. Dilly

I use FFFG in my TC .50cal. The rifle performs well with it, and it burns cleaner for me with less fouling.

My TC 50 cal Hawken really likes 90 grains of 2F Triple seven and a Hornady great plains 385 grain bullet with a felt wad over powder.
