I have finished my second bag. Let me first apologize for the blatant rip off of one of Greg Hudson's bags. I really his bags and I needed to make another one for a rifle that I am working on. I really liked his design, so I copied it. I am not very creative, so I didn't spend much time on trying to alter his design, it would have a lot worse. I was just hoping to get the bag made without making a mess of it.

The bag is made from 3-4oz veg tan leather and has been dyed using Fiebings British Tan dye which I then added a few layers their Medium Brown which I thinned using alcohol. I used what I had around to carve the design into the leather. The large circles were made using a compass, then I used a non-functional ball point pen to deepen and complete the design. The arcs were made using the same ball point and a bottle cap. The small circles were made using the mouth of a 223 cartridge. All the straight lines were made using the dull edge of a table knife and metal straight edge. All the black trim is pig skin. What a pain, very thin and too easy to strech and distort. All the hardware is brass from Tandy. I had made the horn previously. I think it looks ok on this bag.

Thanks to everyone who posts and comments on this board, especially Swampy. His tutorial and posts are what got me started.

Please feel free to comment and critique. I am trying to get better. Sorry for the poor pictures.

Whooooeee! Only your second bag? Let's not talk about my own second bag..... or even the tenth one for that matter. Very nice work, and I really like the overall effect. The thinned brown over British tan is something I'm going to rip off from YOU!!! Thanks!

Maybe your second M/L bag, but you can tell that it isn't your second experience with leather working!.....Nice job!

Rick

PS...Naturally like the paneled buff horn too!

I am still trying to learn. So far I have made two bags, 2 holsters, a belt and knife sheath. I really enjoy working with leather. The projects don't take to long and mistakes are not costly.

Thanks for all the comments, if you see anything that might help me make a better bag, let me know.

Tim

Wow, the only suggestion I can come up with is to stop making bags so mine don't look so bad
That bag is great, beautiful work, and the horn is really sharp also

That's a fine looking bag! :hatsoff: Very fine indeed.

As for copying the design; Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Some craftsmen just have a better "feel" for their materials than others do. You've definitely got the touch for leather. Here's hoping you do lots more.
