I'm looking for a ramrod for my 32 Cherokee. I think it can be no bigger than 5/16. Any suggestions ?
Wes

You may be able to buy an original one on Fleabay or Gunauction sites. However, I bought a solid brass ramrod from a dealer on Fleabay that works extremely well and was reasonably priced.

Indeed he does. Had him make me one for my Deerstalker. Comes with the cleaning jag attached, and he also threaded the other end for a T handle.

They are fiberglass and he cuts them to length.

He's making me a range rod for my pistols now...

I'd go with the brass ones. I have a fiberglass one and frankly, I hate it. The least little nick to it and you will have glass fibers embedded in your skin. I'm going to order a brass rod ASAP.

Are you looking for a replacement for the factory rod or a range rod? My 32 Cherokee was used so I don't know if it has the factory rod. It is black poly or something, 5/16 x 24 1/2" long, with brass on both ends. My son-in-law gave me a nice range rod that is hard aluminum with a copper colored anodized finish, with brass guide, it checks .270 dia. I think it came from Track of the Wolf. Super nice range rod, threaded on both ends, with 8/32 and 10/32.

Brass is fine. But, do look for Delrin as well. That skinny it will be sorta whippy but if you load properly (gripping low), no problem. Won't damage barrel and won't break. Save wood for show.

Thanks to all for the good advice and alternative solutions.

Brass rods will not flake or leave shavings in the barrel unless you have a very sharp crown. I used to make brass rods until I lost my source of recycled brass. :idunno:

I've used a brass rod as my range rod for a couple years now. Only one complaint and only myself to blame. Be sure to match the attachments to the threads in the rod. Either I had the wrong one or I stripped the treads pulling a ball. I have used the "black rods" but in 32 caliber that sucker will whip around - definitely hold low and high.

I have a delrin rod for my .32 Pennsylvania rifle, and it works very well - when the gun is clean. After the first shot, it's more iffy. IT bends rather than push the ball down the barrel. So, I end up having to clean after every shot, rather than having the ability to fire another shot before swabbing the barrel.

Not a bad thing? Cant you just swipe with moose milk and load? I never did till getting my Dutch system but it really doesn't take that much more time and then the barrel is in same condition each and every shot (gotta help accuracy?)

.

Several years ago, I bought a .32 T/C from a board member here, that needed a RR because it came with a very flexible plastic/fantastic RR - so I made one myself.

I bought a 48" long, orange/fiberglas driveway marker from HomeCheapo, cut it to length and pinned/epoxied brass ends/fittings to it.

I've had NP with either the fiberglas RR fraying/etc, or with muzzle wear, since.

YMMV.

That is the obvious thing to do, of course. So much so, that I do something similar. That doesn't mean that I couldn't get a second shot with a stiffer ram rod which was, once more, my point. One of the drawbacks of a Delrin rod is that it tends to bend when it encounters resistance.

My Crocket has aluminum rod but I don't like having to fight the ball down the barrel on 2nd or third shots (which I could do but too much chance of a stuck ball) so I just clean. I wish mine was like others that can "shoot all day"! I have tried every powder n patch n lube combo and they all the same. Hoppes # 9 + was always a great lube in my larger calibers and allowed me to shoot repeatedly but has no affect in the .32. Now, per Dutch system, I just "swipe it and forget it". If you ever do find a combo that works be sure to post it!
