I hope I put this in the right forum ? If not I am sorry in advance. Friend of mine bought an old 36 cal.(custom gun) do not know at this time who built it. Anyway how would you go about converting it to 40 cal? The barell is at least 7/8 across the flats, so is the old barell large enough? The old barrell is not swamped, and weighs a ton. Do you order a new barell? or have the old re-bored? I am new to this forum, and I know you folks have the answers. Thanks in advance, Respectfully Montanadan.

Yes, you sure can get a barrel in 7/8" and 40cal. I think even up to 45cal. This will even of course make the gun lighter, being there is a bigger hole in it. I know Green Mountain makes a barrel this size and I bet Rice, Getz and others do as well.

you can also "freshen" the existing barrel out to 40 cal.

might do a search for some who do that kind of work.

.36 to .40 caliber is only .002 on each side, so there's plenty of room...

The only caution I could think of would be the dovetail cuts in the barrel, depending on how deep they're cut would determined how large you can rebore the barrel...

You may be able to get a new barrel for about the same cost of recutting a bore and rifling the existing barrel, plus bluing/browning once done...

:imo:I wouldn't bore your bbl out to 40 cal., your not goin to save any noticable wieght. If your 36 cal. bore is good leave it be, it's cheap and fun to shoot. you'll get used to the weight. :) I have a 36 cal. 7/8 ths bbl Vincent thats a tack driver.(photo post-my two favorites) I am, as we speek tryin to figer out what spare bbl to make for it, 45 or 50 cal bbl. 45 cal would be ideal for a 7/8 ths bbl, cause I got two in 36" bbls by Douglas. Today I'm going with a Rice bbl. If your rifle is a well made "CUSTOM" it is well worth making or having one made. Reguardles what you paid for it, a descent hand made rifle is going to run $1500-2000 plus. Hope thats of some help to ya. :m2c:

Thanks for catching it...

Ya know MM, coming from you......... as hard as you work and the hours you put in, a mistake is perfectly okay.
