Sorry don't have one to show :) I am looking at getting one built. If anyone knows any makers who might take such a project on please let me know.

The idea is either a cape gun(one barrel rifled, one for shot) or a double smoothbore.
So far I know of several groups who do 'big singles'(pacific, gunworks etc.) and other guys who do doubles(like gefroh) but none who will do a 'big double'.

Thanks for any input or feel free just to talk about 4 bores in general

Regards,
Karl.

The biggest thing will be getting the barrels made... would be heavy :haha:

After having shot a 4 bore single a couple of times, I can tell you why nobody builds them in a double. It's cause one or two shots is about all a man can take and I don't know to many people who want to shoot one enough to get it regulated properly.

I've handled and shot a couple of original 8-bores. They were heavier than I would be willing to carry far on a hunt. Recoil was do-able, but I haven't shot a 4.

I'm guessing the extra weight of a double would help tame recoil of a 4-bore, but I can't imagine what it would weigh. Gun bearers are in pretty short supply on this continent, but I bet you'd be ready to hire one with a double 4!

Didn't Octobercountry make an eight bore double? I am not sure if they are even still around, but they made some really big bore guns for awhile anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys-sorry for my delay in getting back to the thread.

Yes gunworks will do the barrels to any specs they said, but they won't take on making the double itself.

For interests sake it will need to be pretty heavy, 20lbs or so.The idea is for 4 ounce ball or heavier shotloads so the weight is really needed. Its not something most people want to carry around for a long while  , generally they had gunbeares to do so back in the 1800's-maybe one of those hunting trips the wife gets to come too
Anyway, thanks again. I will continue my search.

Karl.
