What size diameter and of what material do you recommend for a range rod for a 40 caliber rifle? Was thinking of some type of synthetic type "flex" rod.

The wooden rod for my .40 is 5/16" and is a nice fit.

I have a stainless steel range/cleaning rod that I share between my guns -- bought it in 5/16" also and it is a nice fit in the .40. I like it better than a "flex" rod, especially while cleaning. The sturdy knob-like handle makes it easy to use -- especially the time (or two) that I had to pull a ball.

I recommend a brass bore protector to go along with metal rods, or any synthetic rod that might abrade your bore / muzzle.

3/8 I use the Dixie Hickory that cost approx $8.00 and you add the stain and oil.

Hmmm. :hmm: Now that you mention it, I'll bet that wooden rod I'm using started out as 3/8".

The good thing about the 3/8 is I can use the same rod in .40-.50  .It will be just under bore size for the .40. I use the 5/16 in my .36's .
