410 side by side

I picked up a youth percussion 410 sbs about a year ago. I wanted to use it for squirrel hunting. I do not have a clue as to where to start for a load. Has anyone had any experience with a 410? Thanks in advance.

Well, Ive never had one myself, but a good charge in a 40 rifle is 40gr. 3f. I would probably start with equal volumes of shot and powder at 40gr volume and work up slowly from there. You may also find that slightly more shot than powder improves the patterns. All of this assumes you have a firearm in good condition and dont have manufacturers suggested load info available. :idunno:

You should be able to contact CVA and get load info (ie maximum safe loads) either online or by phone. Good luck and post some pictures, i'd be interested in seeing it and definately want to hear or see how it shoots/patterns.

I built a 42" x 10 mm smoothbore flint gun years ago. I shot 50 gr 3f, same measure of shot, 2 - .125 moistened card stock wads & a overshot card. It was a squirrel gettin machine.

I have an original belgian .410. I use 40 gr 3f and 40 gr #6 shot on rabbits.I use hornets nest wadding.This kills game very well out to 25 yards.

CVA wouldn't know anything now. Not the same company anymore. Try the back of an old dixie gun works catalog.

Yep, the dixie catalog is a great source of information, even if you never order from them the catalog makes a great reference book. :idunno:

A bud of mine has one, and he does amazingly well on snowshoe hare to 20 yards and a little beyond with a 40 grain measure of shot and the same measure of 2f. That comes out to around 5/8 oz of shot. He reports that it shoots just as well with a 30 grain measure of 3f, but uses the 2f for the convenience of using the same measure for both powder and shot.

BTW- He is using .415 dia overshot cards and a .415 Type A or Nitro (.125" thick) hard card lubed with olive oil between shot and powder. He buys them in bags of 1000 for not much money from TOW.
