Any got one, made one, pros cons of using smoothbore with shot or ball. I have and use 12 GA SXS and 20 Ga. I ran across one small bore was thinking (usually gets me in trouble) a good squirel gun hmmm. A good 13/16" barrel octagon to round might be workable. Any ideas??

Hey Peashooter, I have a .40 smoothrifle that shoots just fine with PRB and shot. I use 60grs.3f for both loads, and for shot, its powder,2 wonder wads[for.44 cal pistol]equal measure of shot[I use mixed shot, swept up from the floor of a modern re-loader,it's free!]and another wonder wad. I've never had it on a patterning board, but its made meat every time she's had the chance. She's a deadly squirrel gun!

Always a winner if it makes meat. A couple of questions, like barrel length, width, stock, percussion or flint, weight etc. I am attracted to the smallbore squirrel getter.

'Ole Wormy is a Southern Mt. style flinter, with a 40" barrel. She was built by Anson Morgen of Kennokee trading post in Avoca Mi. She's an ugly little thing with worm holes all over her,but boy, what a personality! If you can find someone to taper choke the barrel,I'd have it done. Wormys was done years ago by Bill Large, now gone, and I've done it to 4 other smoothies. Good luck and let us know how she shoots!

Sorry for 2 post's,but my edit ferture isn't working yet.The barrel is 13/16 across the flats,and she has a 13 1/2" pull

Hey Peashooter,

My father in law built a .410 tradegun from scratch from a tracing of an origional. The thing shoots amazingly well! I've cut a card in two (on edge), cut straws and smoked many "hole in a hole" targets with it. It shoots shot very well as long as you are a pretty decent shotgunner. The small amount of shot creates a fairly small shot string. The other downside was that it was too light. First he tried a solid steel ramrod, but that didn't quite do it. What he eventually did was to take (don't kill the messenger) an aluminium arrow shaft and pack it full of lead wool. It is now perfect except for the aluminium part. The ramrod now weighs about as much as the gun.

Charcloth.
