ive been thinking about trying 4F powder in my pedersoli screw pistol. its powder chamber is very limited onley holding about 10-12 grains of 3F powder. with this in mind im thinking i could give the little gun more power by loading it with 4F powder. the powder chamber seems very thick and looks like it shouldnt have problems with overpressure.

has any one tried this? is this a bad idea?

thanks

Screw pistols were designed to be lethal across a card table. 12 to 15 grains of 3F should be plenty of power for that. I think you are asking for problems if you go to 4F. The gun might take the extra pressure but then again.

I think loading 4f in your gun is a bad idea. You need to stick to the manufacturer's instructions for that gun. It was intended to shoot 3f and that is what I would use. If you want more power, then buy a larger gun. Those screw barrel guns were meant for close range shooting, no farther than across a room. Don't try to make it do more than it was designed to do or you may pay a dear price for your experiment. If you want more power, then get more gun.

3f Triple 7 works fine in mine and gives that little derringer enough power to cause real harm. Using 4f might be ok but then again? :idunno

Page 6 in the owners manual States."9grains suisse N 1" page. 4 converts suisse to USA 4f. Yes I have shot mine with 4f.Still is a belly gun with just enough oomf to break through 1/2inch plywood.

Why? What do you need the extra "power" for?

same reason i have 6 muzzleloading guns. i dont need 6 guns and i certainly dont need more power in my screw pistol. but sometimes i like to do things just because i want to.

Well, if you do try to shoot it with 4F remember to say to the watching crowd either of these famous last words:

1) Here hold my beer while I try this!

or

2) Wonder what will happen if I try this?

Then I would say, just do it.

well ill be damned, yer right!

i finally took the time to go to the pedersoli website and look up the owners manual. it does indeed say (exact qoute):

2) Load the Derringer by pouring a pre-measured amount of black powder, in the chamber in the frame (part. #2). MAXIMUM LOADS of black powder or equivalent propellent (PYRODEX) must fill the chamber until it reaches the concave portion of the frame (about 9 grs of suiss N. 1).

if you go to the website and download the owners manual its on page 25. im assuming that "suiss" is a poor translation since they said they onley use swiss powder in all of there recomended loads. swiss N. 1 is indeed 4F, so this answers my question right there.

thanks rae!

You'll put your eye out.

:haha:

i did have a red rider BB gun as a kid and i was pretty good with it too. a number of small birds, rabbits, and squirrels met their end via that little gun.

I load for all types of cartridges both smokeless and black powder. One day a friend wanted me to load some "hot" 9mm Luger for him. He asked how hot can ya make em? I told him I could load em hot enough to blow up his pistol. He said just make me one of those.

i've shot 4F in a similar tiny pistol before, we're only talking about 10grns here folks. that's a priming charge for a lock with a large pan. it's a tiny amount of powder, and i doubt it would even bulge the barrel with a total obstruction.
