Weight is also one thing to consider.  Don't know the OP's age but I'll turn 75 this year and all these guns are starting to get heavy.  LOL

If you plan on having a certain gun for a long time, depending on your age, weight is a consideration.  As an example:

I have a full stock percussion plains rifle built in the Hawken style.  That's also what I call it since I wasn't trying to duplicate an exact Hawken.

The gun has a 36" X 1" straight octagon ,58 caliber barrel.  When I selected the parts from TOTW I noticed the straight octagon 1" X .58 was actually lighter than a 1 1/8" tapered octagon in .54  So that's why I went with the .58.  But, at my current age, and able to do it over again, I would have chose a 15/16" X .54 barrel.
