i have been thinking about getting an old friend who recently moved away a blackpowder gun for christmas. This is the person who started me on shooting muzzleloaders a few years ago. I was on the phone with him the other night kinda feeling him out on what he might like. He already has a 50 hawken type rifle. He hinted around about a flintlock 50 cal handgun that the same patchs and balls etc would work on. I dont have tons of money to spend, would really like something used , or even a kit. anybody got any ideas of what to look at and where i might find something this time of year?

all of your input is appreciated.

god bless,

Many like the Lyman Great Plains Pistol which is available in .50 & .54. They're available from a number of dealers, some of the others can probably jump in with the best price. You can also check in with The Gun Works site. They have a Bondini and an older CVA, both in .50. They're different takes on the Hawken style. Good luck.

It sounds like your friend knows about muzzleloaders so I wouldn't hesitate to buy him a Lyman .50 caliber Great Plains Pistol. They use the same size ball as his rifle does.

Nothing against them, but the Traditions, IMO are not up to the quality of the Lyman.

hey Zonie and Wes/tex, thanks for the feedback. I am still fairly new on this forum, is there an advertisers section here with shortcuts to the popular websites? most of what i am seeing seems like percusion 50 cal pistols. my friend is craving a flintlock.
To be honest with you, even though this guy helped me get started, i am not 100 percent sold that we need to go overboard on the quolity as long as it is good. He is one of the types who seem to appreciate most anything as long as it goes BANG!!!! So being 100 percent authetic or of super precision and appearance grade is probably just a waste of time with him and would not be appreciated any more. I think he would even admire a good used older gun, as long as it was safe and functional. any other imput is most welcome.

again, thanks

Traditions makes the Kentucky and Trapper both in flint as kits and finished guns.

Pedersoli also offers flint pistols available through Dixie Gun Works.

You may want to look at Mid South. They usually have the lowest prices.
Dixie Gunworks has several Flintlock pistols but Dixie's prices are usually a bit on the high side.

If there is a Sportsman's Warehouse near you I've found them to have the best prices on the Tradition kits. The Kentucky is only $109 and the Trapper was $149. Percussion. But they can order Flint for you and they are normally $10 more expensive.
