.50 caliber Hawken sighting problems, mine, not the rifle.

I realize this is almost heresy but my crappy old eyes, even with glasses, are really failing me. Is there a peep sight, tang or wrist mounted, that I can use on my Pedersoli Hawken 50? I understand it would lessen the value of the rifle but my sole interest is in shooting it, not sitting around admiring it for its authenticity. Any bona fide serious suggestions would be appreciated.

You could put a 57SML on it, I have one on mine.

Look at some of the similar threads below. There are many options for a peep sight for your rifle. You can also get a diopter type sight that attaches to your shooting glasses that will have the effect of a peep sight. The simplest is a 1/8" punched hole in a square of black electrical tape.

Skinner peeps work well. As do the Williams Foolproof and Lyman 57. I would also recommend a Hadley aperture for the sight. It allows me to use an aperture appropriate to the lighting conditions quickly and easily.

Actually… I may have a Pedersoli sight made for that rifle. I’ll dig around and see what I see…

I don't think some of them are that far off. Excluding custom guns what's a better production replica? Excuse the curly maple.

I have a Pedersoli Traditional Hawken .50. The sights never suited me and as getting older I`m getting long sighted. The rear sight was/is a leaf semi buckhorn.
I took a flat file and filed off the buck horn, then opened up the centre with a chainsaw file. Next I removed the rear sight and re installed it with V end closest to muzzle and bent the V back toward the shooter some to correct the blade angle.
All works well, can see the front sight and any misses are my fault.

I have tried both approaches. The diopter sight that attaches to my glasses is very clumsy and it gives me more grief than I care to put up with. The hole punched in the tape applied to the glasses has been successful but it's possible the old eyes are just getting too old.

I have Lyman 57 SML peep sights on my T/C Hawken (.50cal.) and on my Lyman Great Plains Rifle (also .50 cal.). I love these sights and have used them since the early 1970s when I started shooting muzzle loaders. For what it’s worth, I think you would like these as well.

I put a Pedersoli USA 465 rear sight and a Lyman 20MJT on my Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken. Makes the target very easy to see and enjoy for longer range sessions.
