I have a Lee .50 caliber modern mini. It casts bullets that look like a HB wad cutter on steroids, but I have yet to try them. Does anyone have one, and how do you like them? With the wide flat nose, I would think it would it would hit game hard. If you shoot paper, it would make perfect 1/2" holes........robin :hmm:

Got the .58 to try out.
A while back read somebody telling about how they worked well deer hunting.
I want to try them paper patched and backwards in a fast twist barrel to see how far away I can hit something with it!
:rotf:

Robin, There's nothing inherently wrong with the Lee design. The question is, will it cast large enough to fit your bore? I've owned the lighter and heavier Lee REAL conicals and one of their improved Minie's (all .50cal.), but none cast large enough to fit the bore of my Knight Bighorn. Paper patching helped with the Minie, but couldn't group smaller than 2" @ 50 yd. OTOH, the Thompson/Center .50cal. Maxi-Ball was engraved by the rifling (as it was designed to do) and grouped into 1" or less at the same distance from that rifle.

I got one and never got it to shoot all that great. Good enough for deer but the guns I tried it in weren't the best for a minie. I didn't know much about them back then and there was no internet.
