I have a .50 cal flint smooth rifle that I intend to use for small game. Has anyone ever used a .50 cal smoothbore if so what were your results. I know that I need to work up a load etc. but what experience have you had?

I've built several and the owners report excellent results with shot. Load it with the usuall cards and wads. Try 55grs of powder and equal or slightly more shot and work up from there. My guys say they are certain death on squirrels.

I use a tennesse style .50 smoothbore and find it to be more than able to shoot with twisted barreled crowd. The best is when after the shoot you've won or placed high in the reaction when they find out it's a smoothie! For round ball, load hot,you need the velocity to keep the ball straight, patch tight with a slippery lube, and don't flinch! For shot, lighten the load,say,50-60grs of 2f,anymore and you foul the dickens out of the barrel, and equal measure of shot,or maybe a little more if the squirrel is a bad ass :m2c:
