I am having a 54 cal flintlock, based on virginia rifle, being built by Ross Westgate. 42 inch barrel ++ premium maple stock. Brass fixtures and
double set triggers. Now the waiting begins . Should be completed sometime in october. In time for ML season in NC. (Hopefully).

I love my .54 caliber flintlock. My plan was to build another .50. The guy who sold me the stock blank asked what caliber I planned to build. When I said .50 he said, "You should build a .54. It's the most efficient caliber. Plus it will be lighter than the .50." I'm not sure I know what he meant by efficient, I assume he was talking about ballistics. He said the rb ballistic data Greener compiled for his famous book bears that out. I have a beat up copy of Greener's book. One of these days I'll get around to checking if the data is indeed there or if he was pulling my leg. Anyway, he is very knowledgeable about muzzleloaders so I built a .54. That was 12 years ago. Every time I shoot it, I thank him for talking me into the .54.

You must be in the Piedmont and not down east for the early season...

I use a .54 here myself, favorite load is 80grs FFF Goex behind a .530 ball inside .018 ticking with some of Stumpy's lube...

Have you picked up your flints, powder, ball, lube and ticking so you'll be ready to go when you get her???

Ihave been told the lock takes the Long flint. 3/4 x 7/8 . Have to order some of them . I have evreything else on hand.

Thanks to all for the warm response.

Don't, that's the Large Siler, they don't come better...I have flints and balls if you need them...

How far are you from Asheboro???

I thank you for the advise.aAlso the kind offer.
I live in Hamptonville NC exit 65 off rt 77. Approvimately 70 miles from ashboro. I go past ashboro on way to cherokee copule times a month.
I enjoy rideing my Harley up in the mountain area.
and have been around ashboro but, never in the town of ashboro itself. I have heard the chambers is the best once before. I will keep it .

Thanks again

I'm guessing you have Asheville and Asheboro mixed up...Asheboro is 30 miles south of Greensboro, off Hwy 220...It's in the center of the state, we have the NC Zoo here...

If you need supplies, let me know...Parks & Sons is in Advance, west of Winston...I usually buy my powder there...

Your correct I did mix the two up. You are 72 miles from me. I will check out parks and sons in advance.

Thanks again.

Good choice, but Chambers makes a dozen different flintlocks.

Can't possibly know what size flints you need unless we know what model your builder is using. Enjoy, J.D.

The lock is a Chambers deluxe Siler. Should take a 3/4 x 7/8 flint if I am correct. ENG -6 from TOW

Good choice, you should be pleased with that lock. And you are correct on the flint size. Enjoy, J.D.

I put a Deluxe Large Siler on a sort- of Isaac Haines ... the lock is great ... so many sparks you could restart the Great Chicago Fire with it ... you won't be sorry!

when your new rifle comes, send pictures ... we love pictures...

Sounds like a first true custom??
I remember my first - I never went backwards after that.
Worth every penny.
