Finally got a chance to shoot my new Green Mountain T/C IBS drop in barrel! What took so long was I absolutely had to refinish that ugly thing! After browning everything (LMF), she was ready for the range! .535 Hornady roundball, .018 pillow tick patch, and 2F Goex (Thanks for the recipe forum members!) Sights had been removed and re-installed so first shots at 25 yds...3-shot cloverleaf at 3 o'clock...adjustment..2" high dead center at 50 yds. Ironically the impact was almost the same at 100yds! Guess those .54 carry their weight a little better than .50's. The ball and patch combo are a little hard to get started, but push down the barrel with the same consistency. My T/C barrel was hard at first but hit a section midways down where it felt the ball/patch combo almost dropped about 8 inches resistance free before a little resistance and then bam, she was seated. The GM barrel seemed to foul a lot less, and didnt need to be swabbed as often between shots. This may have been because I'm using mink oil tallow from TOTW instead of T/C bore butter like I was using in my T/C .50 barrel. I just shot 90 grs, but have not really experimented with other owder charges yet. Finally realized what T/C cheek slap is! Never really experienced it with the .50 rb, but woke uo this morning with a bruised cheek after 30 rds of .54 roundball...I think I'm in love

Yeah, a .54 is a good all around choice in caliber in my opinion. It will do it all with great aplomb.I like mine much more than I did the .50 cal I had before. MD

need some Pictures :). i cant wait to get my hands on a 54.. hopefully nobody outbids me on gunbroker

1 question on the mink oil tallow.. do you know what the difference is between it and regular mink oil that can be bought at walmart or elsewhere for leather?

The difference is the one from tow is actually mink oil, the others are not. How do I know?????? I just bought some from a local tractor supply and it is Mink oil in name only. It is just a bunch of handcream and such.

I am waiting for Green Mountain to restart production on their 54 cal drop in barrels around
the first of the year. I am wanting a slow twist
barrel with their .010 deep cut rifling. TC has
rather shallow rifling and soots up quicker.

The GM IBS drop in barrels have the patent breech. You can make a similar barrel by buying an aftermarket breech plug from TOTW or other supply house.
