Have any of you that shooot a .54 smoothbore ever measured the bore to see if it is a true .54 or if it is a .55? If it is a .54 and you use shot in it, does a standard .28 ga wad work in them? Thanks for any info.

Yes, the 28 ga wads work fine in a .54, you can't tell the difference. When I order barrels in 28 ga. I always specify a .55 bore, that's what a true 28ga is by the way, .55 cal.
If it's long barreled you'll be surprised how well a 28 ga shoots shot!

John Getz coined that term for my smooth rifles. My 28ga.'s with his barrels in them were ruling the shoots on the primitive range at Freindship in years past. One match in particular was called the "Widow Maker". It was a full sized british soldier shot at about 60 yards. You had to place all of your shots where his shoulder belts crossed. Smallest group closest to the center wins. This is where my smooth rifles gained that name. :winking:
Of course it didn't hurt that some of the best shots there were shooting my guns either. It's easier for your guns to come out on top when the right people are shooting them! :haha:

Haven't measured my GM .54cal smoothie's bore yet but the overshot cards I bought for it say .54cal/.28ga on the package, work perfectly, etc

Hello,
I shoot a .54 tradegun with a northstar barrel. I have never measured it. I use standard 28 ga. wads, cards etc. No problems. I shoot a load a little lighter than other that I know who are shooting a .54. I use 70 gr. of goex and an equal amount of shot. I don't mean to brag but I come from a club of good shooters. Once I learned where the darn thing patterns I often place atleast second when shooting birds. With roundball there are three of us who usually tie for first or one of us will drop a shot now and then. Redbeans and otter are hands down the best around here, but I'm sneakin up on them.
