I have a tc renegade in .50 cal and have found a new .56 cla smoothbore barrel for it. what would be a good price for the barrel. and how well do they shoot with balls and as a shotgun?

Thanks

i may be wrong but i thought the .50 was 15/16" in size and the .56 is 1". i don't think it will fit in the same stock. check the thread "why buy a renegade smoothie". i received a lot of good info in that thread.

pretty sure the renegades have a 1" barrel flats, 54 and 50 cal. I think the hawkins in 50 cal. have a 15/16" barrel and the 54 has a 1" barrel. flinch

wouldn't be the first time i was wrong! i have a .50 hawken and a .56 renegade. knew they were different. :hatsoff:

Good responses you got here...BUT...all is not lost...

A few months ago I bought a GM .54cal(.28ga) Flint Smoothbore drop-in barrel for the regular size TC Hawken stock...it's 15/16" x 33" and it's outstanding!
(surely they make it in a caplock too, check their site under "replacement barrels)

Took 10 and 8 pointers with it in November, and it throws a perfect pattern of #6's at 25yds...planning to get out after bunnies & squirrels for a few Saturday's.

Buy it Tex, It is a great barrel for all seasons! You should be able to get it for less than $80.00.

thanks for all the info. The one that I found the guy wants 120 plus shipping. Where can I get one for 80 dollars?

here in austin it is almost impossible to find any good used traditional rifles. the gun show we have come to town is a joke. SO I look mostly on ebay and the gun auction sites.

You could email the guy and offer him less when he doesn't sell his barrel on ebay.

I did here is his answer

Thanks for the educated offer (research driven analysis) but I will use this barrel for a tomato stake before I sell it for $80.00

Did you ask him how many tomatoes he is expecting off that plant? I see complete .56 T/C smoothbores on the auctions for around what he wants for just the barrel.

Sorry I bought my .56 smoothie for less than he wants for the barrel, in the box new! I know it was a good deal but since then I've seen several sell for $150-200, lock, stock, and barrel. However that doesn't mean it isn't worth it. It is a great, underappreciated barrel. But I'm betting he won't sell it for $120.

It may not sell for that...but if there's one thing I've learned using various gun auctions over the years, I'm always surprised that there's somebody, somewhere, who has a burning need for an item almost regardless of the cost.

I've seen a couple of new TC .56cal SB barrels go for $150-160 just within the past year...I wouldn't pay that for one, but somebody wanted them bad enough to.....I bought a clean used on several years ago for $60, and although it did OK, I thought it was awfully short for my tastes, and since I was switching to Flintlocks around then I never really used it, eventually sold it.

GM's .54cal/.28ga smoothbore drop-in for TC's with it's longer 33" barrel is an outstanding alternative, plus they offer it in Flint...accuracy is outstanding and for me, I find longer the length more appealing...esthetics, balance, sighting plane, etc...have it on a Hawken stock.

Origionaly back in the late '60s and early '70s the Renegades could be purchased with a .50, .54 or .58 cal. rifled barrel or a .56 cal. smooth bore. Also extra drop in barrels could be purchased to swap back and forth, however I believe the .58 rifle and .56 smooth were only available in percussion.
The smooth barrel was made by the Sharron Barrel Co. These barrels shot very well with either a .550 patched roundball or with shot. One of my customers has taken many turkey with #4 shot and 70 gr. of 3F with one of these barrels converted to flint.
To find one of these barrels today (especially NEB) I would probably expect to pay a C-note or more.
