6150 Cast Springs Rifle Shoppe

Has anyone had any success following the Rifle Shoppe’s instructions for hardening springs with a water quench ?

I have since switched over to mineral oil and have had consistently no cracked springs.

I know some gunbuilders do use a water quench, what is your procedures for avoid hair line cracks?

Rifle Shoppe says they use a propane torch with a Rich Flame to heat the springs to a dull red color.

Probably best to use Canola oil heated to 130 degrees.

Yeap, that’s more or less what I’ve been doing now.

Was just wondering how the rifle shoppe gets their springs to not crack with a water quench?

If you use warm water almost hot to quench it will not be such a shock but for springs I think oil would be better
