I've been sticking another patch folded up on top of the powder. Been using the damp patch when swabbing between shots.

It is the yellow lube from t.c. the rifle is a custom 42" barrel with round bottoms

I would like to see pics of those patches. Your fit may be loose allowing blow-by and burning. What size ball? Have your tried larger?

Crapshooter, It would help to answer your question if we know the ball diameter, patch material and thickness. Barrel manufacturer might help, exact bore diameter would help. That's a pretty stiff load, but not unreasonable for a .62. Did you work up to that charge and were the patches tearing at a lesser charge as well?

I shoot pillow ticing I think is .015 I shoot .600 balls I tried .610 but seemed to tightI dont know the brand of the barrel but is has groves thart are rounded I have tried less powder I dont know if it tears the patch or not but I want good tajectery am Idoing this thing right?

Crapshooter, Your patch is way too thin. See if you can find some tightly woven pillow ticking, or pocket drill around .020-.026 thick, or even denim, though in my experience denim of equal thickness is harder to compress than the other two. You will probably need a short starter. You should also check the muzzle to see if it has been crowned. If not, is is very easy to do with some emery and the end of your thumb, but does require you to remove the barrel from the gun.

yer patch is too thin.

your patch ball combo is .615 and your barrel is most likely .620. if a .610 ball is too much then try a .020 patch.

my general goal for loading a rifle is a patch and ball combo thats at least .005 larger then inside bore diameter (this onley applies to store bought patches). out of my 50 cal i use a .490 ball with a .015 patch, this gives me a total of .505. i tried cramming a .018 patch in there and it required a mallet. the .015 and .490 ball will go in with a short starter.

having thought this over, my math is wrong. but i still believe your patch is too thin and would recomend moving to a .020 patch.

I use a .610 ball, .015 patch lubed with crisco. My muzzle is coned, My hunting load is 80 grains thats more than enough ooomph to shoot thru almost anything.

WOW, I shoot 60 grns 3f target, and 80 grns 3f hunting. Both smoothbore and rifled have killed deer at 50 yds plus or minus without issue.
Seems to me your using too much powder.

yes 120 grs is a lot of powder but I love the 62 flint just havent got her figured out yet maybe will get her to shoot bydeer season iwant to take a sand hills mulie jerry
