Has anyone fired a prb from a .62 cal through a chronograph to check velocity?

Try Bob Spencer's site, he did some serious work-up.

I checked the velocity of a .600 325 grain round ball over 80 grains of 3f and it clocked somewhere in the 1300's...........60gr of 3f did around the 1200 mark..........This is with a 42 inch barrel and the balls patched well.
I'd like to see a penetration test of the .600 ball at these velocities............Bob

Leaterhbark: I have not done a penetration test with my 20 gauge shooting RB, but the ball weighs 3/4 oz, and you are going to get a lot of penetration, regardless of the velocity or distance to target. I did penetration testing years ago using 1 inch pine boards spaced 1 inch apart. My .50 cal. RB penetrated 6 boards and smacked into the 7th! That is 1/4 oz. I would expect my .62 to penetrate at least 8 boards, based on other projectiles tested that da, and I would not be surprised it it went further. I have seen 20 ga. slugs tested in other mediums, and they are awesome.

In my rifle chrono results 8 13 2005 at 60 degrees shows, 70 grains 2f goex 1191, 80 grains 1291, 90 grains 2f goex 1348, 100grains 1424, 110 grains 1475 average all with 2f goex.. Bore condition, fouling, wipe etc has a big difference in velocities in this gun, as stated it is not a smoothbore.. When i was talking to Getz when he built the barrel he said when he elk hunted he and his friends added a little tin to thier lead to get better pennetration.. dave

My 20 ga. 36" barreled smooth flint rifle shot a .604" lead RB at 1150 fps over 70 grains ffg. The ball would penetrate a 100 pound doe side to side or front to back and keep on going. Wonky

At Braddock's defeat there are accounts of NDN bullets (from trade guns) going through 3 Red Coats and hitting a forth .

I have read those kinds of accounts, and especially the Revolutionary War accounts of the frontier raids and ambushes. I might believe two pass throughs, but would think three or more would be rare. From killing many deer and recovering only 2 lead RB, It takes a diagonal shoulder to hip joint shot to stop a 54 or 58 RB inside a deer and then the balls were flattened to quarter size with 1/3 of the round ball left on the saucer shape. Never got a ball back on a broadside shot except a .32. Wonky

Any signs of expansion with the .62 RB? What distance were the shots on game?

I never recovered a 62 from the 2 does, but you could stick a golfball in the exit wounds. I think both shots were about 35/40 yards on deer that were not spooked. It looked exactly as if shot with a 20 ga. foster hollow base, round nose lead slug. Wonky
