I finished up a .62 caliber rifle for a friend, and we are planning a trip to the range in a week. I have never shot a .62 caliber. do you suggest .600 or .610 round ball?

I was figuring on a 70 grain load of 2f to start. Do that sound reasonable?

Ball size is completely dependant on bore size. You need to measure the bore's lands and grooves and use a ball .010" under land diameter. The powder charge sounds O.K. for a starting load. The gun will tell you when you shoot something it likes. Good luck.

I had a .62 rifle that shot a .610 round ball. I used .018 patching and 75 grains of 3F. The gun was accurate out to 75 yards, but I never could figure out what it was doing at 100 yards.

Hey Doc,
I have two .62 cal. rifles, one is a long rifle, buit by Brad Emig, the other is a heavy Hawken built by "MOI"(me) with an Adcock barrel, I picked up in Ohio, at a Rondezvous, in the 80's
They both work well with a .610 ball, and 100 grs. 2f.
The long rifle is a beast to shoot off the bench, where as the Hawken is a pussy cat.
My best groups demand a patch over the powder to prevent patch burn out on the ball.
My Hawken will shoot 2" at a 100 yds, I cheated and put arpeture sights on the rifle. My long rifle won't do as well cause I can't see well enough.
I hope this helps.

Doc, as one reference, my GM smoothbore barrels are actually made (and mic) as .610s, so I used .600s with .015" patches...very accurate to the .50yds I zeroed it. (80grns Goex 3F as a deer load).

If you're just going plinking, shooting cans, etc...60grns 3F (70grns 2F) should work fine
