11/15/06 ”“ 8:00am, shot small 6 pointer with the .62cal Flintlock smoothbore.

He was coming straight towards me on a trail to a drainage ditch, and I’m in a natural ground blind 30yds from the ditch”¦got myself ready, began tracking him in the sights, and when he got to the edge of the ditch he stopped and stretched his nose down to sniff the edge of the bank.

I intended to shoot him on my side of the ditch as it’s 5-6 feet deep and didn’t want to have to drag him up out of it, but with his head & neck extended down like that, the neck vertebrae was completely exposed and too good of a shot to pass up...figured if I was off a hair the ball would go through his heart anyway.

Put the bead on his vertebrae with his heart lined up behind it and touched the set trigger on the Flintlock...never knew what hit him...collapsed like a wet rag and slid down into the ditch...the ball went dead center through his vertebrae, heart, and out the bottom.

Congratulation, Roundball, on a fine buck. Sounds like the perfect shot. Sorry you had to drag him out of that ditch. Been there and done that, and don't want to have to do it again! Nice that you could use that .62 smoothrifle for this kill. You could not ask anything more of any gun. You must be very proud, and with very good reasons.

I bet the last thing that deer heard was KAABOOOM from that thar 62 :rotf:
way to go, got any pics
:hatsoff:

Congratulations Roundball. :winking: Way to go.
Any pictures yet??

Nice job!!! Too bad my season in over already :shake: . That just goes to shot that a traditional flinter with no rifling, and a PRB is very effective!! Any pics?

Sorry, no pics...he wasn't anything to write home about and wasn't worth wasting a disposable camera/roll of film on...he looked like the brother to the 8 pointer I posted last week, but without any brow tines.

I was mainly just tickled at how well this smoothbore barrel shoots...granted it was only 30yds but I hit him in the vertebrae exactly where I was aiming...not a very big target, woods conditions, etc.

And it really is a shame that the majority of muzzleloading hunters at large have no idea how accurate & reliable sidelocks / PRBs are, including smoothbores.

Bramble, I guess you've noticed our NC weather forecast for tomorrow morning:
Heavy rain
Thunderstorms
Winds 22 mph

If they stay 'shut in' heavy cover during the bad weather tonight & half the day tomorrow, when the trailing edge of the front clears through they'll be hungry and probably start moving when it slacks off...that would be a good time to be in the woods, earlier than normal

Congratulations Rounball. Nice shooting.
My friend sometimes uses his .62 smoothbore for deer hunting. I have seen some of his targets at 50 yards with it, being fairly new to the front stuffer scene I was amazed how acccurate it was.

Way to go, Roundball! You sure are consistant on the whitetails. Must be great to be in an area that allows such liberal limits on deer. I really wish sometimes that I could hunt close to home and not hold on so dearly to one deer tag. Congrats!
