Now that the .62cal is dialed in for deer season, I'm done with it until November...decided to shoot an intermediate size caliber this morning to step back down towards the .40cal that's on it's way.

Decided to take a .54cal...and after 250 .62cal balls & hunting size powder charges, shooting a .54cal with target charges seemed like shooting a toy!

But it was a beautiful morning...59* and heavy dense fog...right after I started shooting I had to stop for a couple minutes while a flock of turkeys slowly made their way across the shooting lane about 150yds out...a great day to make smoke!

LOL. reminds me how most of my moose hunting was done in Alaska, from my shooting bench (with a thermos of coffee) in the back yard. Wasn't interested in being sporting, was after meat.

Well, you can still work the concept of 'fair chase' into that scenario...after all, there had to be times that both your hands were occupied pouring coffee... :rotf:

I personally prefer the rifled bore 58s and 54s versus the smooth bore 62. If I need to add distance while hunting, it's there. :v

No question...my .58 is my favorite big bore rifle...got this .62 smoothie just for the experience of it, and will use on deer this fall...in the thick places and botrtoms I hunt the shots are in the 35-50yd range.

Q for roundball how is a rifled 58 better than the same in 62 since Ive got both just wondering, is it a range thing ?,cause of my years in a wheelchair and out now Ive found the 62 to be much lighter wt. Fred :hatsoff:

I'm no authority...my own conclusion is that a rifled .58 will shoot flatter further, than the heavier .62cal ball would, simply because it's a little smaller size (wind resistance) and about 50grns lighter weight.
But, that probably won't make a hill of beans difference from one person compared to another, depending on what, how, and where each different person is hunting anyway.
And...in the other post we were comparing a .58cal 'rifle' to a .62cal 'smoothbore', not a rifled .58 to a rifled .62, which your post suggests that you have...and if you've already noticed a benefit of the .62cal to you, then that seems like a good reason to stay with your .62.

Ok got it. Ya I know the 58 is faster as the 54 is faster and the only real gain is in the bigger ball bucks the wind shooting longer ranges (as the 50 seems to be the best "overall" target ball out to 100, the 40 if no wind)(all things being the same that is) I havent been shooting RBs that long always minie/maxies since I was in the wheelchair all those yrs they are a easy load compared to balls,( Id just find a wt,lenght, powder charge so they would work in a 1X66) now they have a lift weight since Im out of te chair of 5 lbs(the docs put to me because of back strain) so I cheat a little,, haveing 1 last rifle made I always wanted a fullstock Hawken Im useing a 1X36" in 62 cause the weight is less than 58, trying to save even oz's makeing it, and dont mind lobbing a big ball. Was just wondering if I had missed something else in my plans Ive been shooting these since 72 I guess and looked like you might have a little time more in on me. Thanks much. Fred :hatsoff: :yakyak: :yakyak:

There have always been fellers who thought if their rifle didn't inflict as much damage as and enraged (insert the critter of yore choice).
Why even that famous griz skinner Jeramiah Johnson thought he'd died and gone to heaven, after pryin' Hatchet Jack's .50 Hawken, from his cold dead hands. :rotf:
