I'm trying to find some #8 chilled shot at reasonable price. Where do you guys buy your shot? Thanks

Find a local gun shop or trap range...Lead is heavy to ship....Guys that sell a lot can sell it cheaper because they can ship it cheaper....When you buy it online you pay shipping twice.

I would also try Ballistic Products inc.

The cheapest I have found is reclaimed shot from the trap and skeet range. Opens the pattern up quite a bit though, lot's of fliers. My percentage on dove and quail goes way up when I use the reclaimed stuff.

What will you shoot when there is a total lead ban in the state of California?

I get the majority of my shotgun reloading from Gamaliel's shooting supply. Even with shipping, shot us less than any place around where I live. They were wanting $60 per 25lb bag at the one outlet who usually had shot. Even though you have to buy 2 bags of shot at a time, for me it's well worth it. I usually buy 4 bags at a time.

No longer hunt ruffed grouse, but at one time did experiment w/ chokes and found improved cylinder bore to be the best for this quick shooting.

Also tried deformed shot that was made by placing the shot between 2 steel plates and whacking the top plate w/ a big mallet. This shot was used in a modified bore and did improve the percentage of hits on grouse. Sold this shotgun so ceased deforming shot.

All the shells were handloaded and tried plastic shot cups which prevented shot deformation thereby yielding smaller, tighter shot patterns but were lousy for grouse......Fred

Works great for me too! AND the cost can't be beat. Free where I live.

How in the world do they reclaim shot from a trap and skeet range? It is scattered all over the ground and they would have to dig up all of the dirt from the skeet and trap range and separate the shot from the dirt somehow. How do they do that?

They did petty much that at our local trap club. They mined the soil down range of the trap lines and reclaimed tons of lead. This financed range improvements. BJH

Beats the heck out of me. There really is no good alternative to lead from both the cost and performance perspectives. For turkey you only fire two or three shots a season so cost is not a deal breaker, but dove and quail can chew through a bag of shot pretty quick. Might have to default to modern and steel, and perhaps go out of state also.

At our club they contracted with an entity that brought in a machine that scraped up the top inch or two of dirt, grass, debris, and shot. The mix was dropped through the air from a blower which let the shot fall through to the bin and blew the rest out the back. Sure made a lot of dust and noise.
