I went to look for a way to transport my Pedersoli Brown Bess to the range, and could not find a good hard case out there. I had plenty of wood scraps laying about, so I took a scrap of 3/8" plywood and some 1X3 furring strips and started in on it.

I bought a piano hinge and some brass catches. I'm in the middle of staining and varnishing. After that, I'll have to figure out an interior lining. I'm thinking green felt glued to some thin foam. More on this later. It ain't furniture grade, but it'll get the job done.

There you go - always need to have a project going, I have 6 or 7 in various stages on undone. Just started thinking about #8 here lately.
If that box was a wee bit wider you could get two guns in there - just sayin...

Be sure and post pics of the finished product.

Oh, it would hold 2 scoped rifles, a reloading kit, and my lunch. The interior dimensions are just under 12" X 58" It's roomy. I'm going to have to play with how I secure 'Bess so she doesn't flop around while I'm figgerin' out something permanent.

Here's one I just finished up for a Whitworth

Dave951: That is impressive!

My attempt at a box is quite a bit less beautiful, but I was going on the idea of using what scraps were readily at hand. Here the latest progress:

I had a scrap of plywood that was just the right length to bend in an arc in the box. I cut 1X3 chunks, and intend to glue the plywood to the chunks at some point. It gives me the benefit that I'll be able to get everything cut and fitted before lining the box with green felt. I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to do with the upper half yet. The overall effect is somewhat "Early American Dorm Room," but it's functional and sturdy.

I had to suspend work on the box this afternoon. The sling swivels showed up. They came from GG Godwin, Sutlers. I oiled the sling and prepped the swivels. I'll have all that on Bess first thing in the AM.
