I'll be the stick in the mud and say I've never seen the use for it (Ballistol). Cold water and a touch of soap plunging up and down with a patch , followed by hot water to rinse/dry. Then a dose of WD-40 (bulk one gallon can NOT aerosol!) to disperse water, then patch dry. Followed by Brownells Rust Preventative #2. No Rust, no fuss.

There's something wrong with people who like the smell of Ballistol, in the morning or any other time. Now Hoppes #9 that's something else. I'd wear it for cologne but I'm afraid it would attract too many of the wrong gender.

I will say there is not a finer smell then a dairy farm on a cold crisp morning!!!

I’ll bet you guys that don’t like the smell of ballistol love the smell of garlic!!
You got that right! Two entirely different aromas to the sensitive nose.

I wouldn't call it fine but it is noticeable. As a kid in the 50's I spent a couple of years in Tillamook on the Oregon coast. That's real dairy country. I well remember the smell of what they called "liquid". It was a combination of cow pee and manure that was watered down enough to spray on the pastures through the irrigation system. It got your attention real quick!

a few years back I was driving thru dairy country in upper Wisconsin in late September. it was late afternoon and all the leaves were gold and red and it was about 70 degrees and one of the most beautiful scenes i had ever seen. I told the guy sitting next to me "man I would love to live here, so beautiful".
the next morning I woke up and it was about 20 degrees and I had to get out and untarp and unchain my load (flatbed truck driver) and remember saying, "man this place sucks let's hurry up and get out of here". beautiful country but way too cold, lol.

Once I programmed myself to not be averse to getting it on me due to smelling like week old gym clothes, I don't mind it, actually have zero like/dislike for it. It does a good job in moose milk and helps absorb moisture from the bore after cleaning when used straight on patches. It smells a lot better than black, sulfurized cutting oil when it starts to smoke off of a hot lathe tool.

This brings up another memory of odors from my youth. When I was 7 or 8 years old a friend of mine came running up to me and said "hey, smell this". He had something on the end of his finger so I leaned over to smell it. He shoved his finger clear up my nose and ran off. He had a piece of cat poop on it. I was gagging and hacking so much I couldn't even go after him!
