I had been itching to get out and do some shooting but most of the local Forest Service roads are pretty well snowed in. After a few tries I managed to find a road that allowed access to a shooting spot.

I brought my Tip Curtis .54 cal Lancaster along for the day. The bag, horn and measure are of my own making.

I need to move the point of impact a little left. I did not wipe the bore between shots and was happy to get nine rounds before experiencing a flash in the pan. A simple wipe of the pan and she went right off. I used mostly spit patches with a few prelubed patches mixed in.

The snow was pretty deep at about 5,000 feet.

I was looking forward to making a fire and brewing up some cowboy coffee but the winds were pretty high so I cancel that idea.

A view of Mount Shasta poking through the clouds on the drive home. Thanks for looking!

That is pretty country. I used to live in Yreka CA, when I worked for, what is now, Cal Fire. Been gone from there now 20 years.

I sure wish Mr. Tip was still around..🥲

I own two of his guns a .54 & a 16 gauge smoothbore.

Thanks. Yes, I was sad to hear of Mr. Curtis’s passing. I was living in Georgia at the time I bought the rifle and drove up to his shop in Tennessee to see what he had on hand. He welcomed me into his shop and we talked for about two hours. This rifle felt just right when I shouldered it so it was the one I bought. He was a real nice fellow and made a real solid rifle at a pretty affordable price in my opinion. I was very impressed with his stories of self guided successful elk hunts in the Idaho backcountry with a Jaeger rifle. If I remember right he said he was in his sixties when he made those hunts!

I live about an hour away from where his shop was located in Cross Plains…

I always enjoyed my time around him..👍
