With squirrel season fast approaching, I decided a new shot pouch was of an order.

Took a break from my garb sewing project today and whipped this together in about an hour and change.

Elk hide bag stitched with linen in a basbeall stitch. Neck is deer antler secured with a wrapping of hemp, real sinew and elk rawhide sealed with hide glue. Stopper is made from hickory that's tapered for a tight seal attached by a strip of elk hide. Stopper has beeswax melted and rubbed into the wood as a sealer. Also worked a good amount of mink tallow into the hide as well.

Just a neat, quick little project I wanted to share. These type things are just fun and functional! :hatsoff:

Thank you! With no. 5 shot I've never had any issues with doing so.

I usually use a light load within 25 yards, does just the trick and won't tear their little bodies up. The occasional shot does have to be picked out but nothing I find to overwhelming.

Anyways, glad this little piece helps kick start the possibility of taking a smoothie out!

A shot gun works great....But my buddies don't like picking them out....
Our rule is, head shots only.... :haha:

Rabbits are great shotgun fodder....

Excellent! Really fine design and workmanship.

Have you weighed how much shot it will hold. Kinda surprising really. I found a pouch roughly the size of a lemon holds a pound of shot. Only reason for doing it is to "meter" how many shots your carrying.

I would estimate it'll hold far more than I'll need in a days hunt. Even more since I use a light load.

I've actually ended up making two if the little ones. For ptarmigan and in years of high snowshoe hare abundance, it's not uncommon to fire 30 shots in a day (mostly 7/8 oz charges). But then there are days I don't want to do so much shooting. If I'm anticipating a big day, I carry both. For slow days I carry only one.

Just makes me jealous! I can just envision the beautiful scenery!

I'm going to make a few measured horn shot dippers as well, essentially like a finger charger. I don't own a fancy shot measure in drams nor do feel it's absolutely necessary to purchase one. I've always weighed my shot loads with the reloading scale then wrapped them in 10 or so individual paper bundles.
