I decided I needed a new knife so I made this for me last week. It has a false tang & secured with Devcon 2000 and a brass retaining pin. The guard is made of 1/8" brass bar, cut & filed to shape & the end cap from 1/8" brass plate. The blade is 6 1/4" long by 1 1/4 x 1/4". The 4 1/4" handle is a piece of elk antler. On the larger heavier bladed knives such as this & larger I like to use rivets rather than stitch the sheath, as with a heavy bladed knife it is real easy for someone to cut a stitch putting it back in the sheath. Note the strap has the snap on the back side away from the brush when walking forward, as not to hang up on vines & etc & get unsnapped. Also, tho I am right handed, I carry it on my left side as not to bump or scrape the butt of my rifle on the handle.
The knife below is knife is one I made for my cousin a couple of weeks ago. It has a full tang & the Elk slab handle is secured with 3 brass pins. The blade on this one is 8 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/4". The plate on the end is secured with a 8x32 brass screw drilled & tapped into the end of the rull tang, plus Devcon2000 epoxy, then the screw head filed down til the slot is gone. This made a nice neat substantial end for the handle & also covered the porus end of the Elk antler slabs. The sheath is made like the sheath on the shorter knife at top.
This knife is larger than I like for personal use as I don't like that belt weight & I find the long blade harder more cumbersome than useful. But he is more of a collector than a skinner so it should be OK. :hmm: (i hope)
