So there I was last weekend, in coastal California, at a delightful little ranchhouse museum near Carmel.

I am studying local historical firearms. Mostly these guns are just rotting, or in bits, but I couldn't help but notice that this little ranchhouse museum had a very rusted first model Colt Dragoon on the wall...allegedly used by a Californiano/Mexican ranchero to shoot at Col. John Fremont during a skirmish. But I'm wondering...If the first year of production for the Colt Dragoon was 1848, and Fremont's Mounted Rifles were in service in California in 1846/1847, then we have a disconnect, don't we? How could that pistol have been used to take a shot at Fremont?

Thoughts?

Thought#1...They made up the story to enhance interest in their gun.

Thought#2...Maybe the shot at Fremont was later than 1847. Did they say WHEN this skirmish took place? :hmm:
