So I supposedly find a TC 56 SB on Gunbroker. But one of the photos showed a rifled bore. I messaged the seller, but he hasn't responded. I placed a bid thinking it was a smooth bore, but it's early in the auction and I likely won't win anyway. Did TC ever rifle these guns?

That’s not TC rifling either. Maybe Hoyt or someone else rifled that barrel. TC rifling would be equal (or nearly so) lands and grooves narrow lands, wide grooves aren’t them. Barrel is much shorter than the stocker too…

To my knowledge…these were all smoothbores; sold as an after market drop-in barrel to make the gun more versatile.

This is the response from the seller. He amended the description.

A few gunbroker users have emailed me about the rifling in the barrel of this muzzleloader. It is rifled, and the barrel is marked SB.
an internet search tells me that means it's a smooth bore but it is definitely not a smooth bore.

your guess is as good as mine. Maybe a factory mistake? I'm not very well-versed on the black powder stuff.

Found the auction. Looks like a Renegade lock, stock & barrel with a addition of a nose cap and homemade brass butt plate. Trigger guard and ferrules have been replaced, barrel browned and rifled. I would want to see it and look it over before paying much for all that "custom" or possible thrown together work. Also, the seller isn't showing the Renegade markings on the barrel so your at his mercy for the description, yet he is showing the serial number. Innocent mistake? Maybe, but in my experience if they are not showing something it's because they know it's not right. Bid accordingly.

When BP deer seasons started, my state was smoothbore only. When rifled barrels were allowed (round ball only initially), some gunsmiths started rifling the .56 SB barrels and many of these were very well done. A close examination of the bore will tell the tale quickly. If it looks good, I would go for it, but it better look GOOD!

So are you going for it or letting it be?

In the 3 or 4 days that I've been fighting with myself over whether I want to bid on this or not I've done a lot of observing of it. So, a rambly discourse on some of the speculations/educated guesses based on those observations are, it left the factory as a standard 56SB Renegade. Along the way whether they Johnny Cash'd it or did it all at once, it had the factory markings removed except for the serial#, the barrel was browned & dovetailed and the long Hawken sight installed, the front sight modified to look more traditional, more traditional looking thimbles were installed as well as a nose cap, triggerguard, and the brass buttplate. the 56SB was added to denote caliber. and at this point it was likely considered 'done'. But then they decided to send it to be rebored/rifled and it now sports a 58cal RB rifled bore.

The seller obviously knows little or nothing about muzzleloaders. It could turn out to be a rare find or it could be a pig. I'd be hard pressed to make any decision on buy or not buy.

I was thinking (a bad sign) that it was not possible to take a .56 SB and rifle it and still have a .56 caliber gun. I think Bubba.50 is correct, and the barrels is now a rifled .58 caliber.

Except you're gonna have a heck of a fight getting a .570 ball down the .56 bore. If Hoyt did this one he likely just cut the grooves, leaving the bore at .56”

No way to prove it one way or the other unless the OP, myself, or someone else here on the forum buys it but, I'd make a small wager that it's now a 58 caliber with a roundball twist.
