So the other day my buddy and I go out shooting paper, when we get done we go over to his house to clean our rifles. He happens to mention that his barrel has a rough spot near the bottom, about 4 inches up from the nipple. So he asks me to run a patch through it and tell him what I feel....sure enough there's a spot about 1 inch that feels rough. I call it rough because I could feel the patch get tighter in that one spot. So I suggested he run a brush through it several times and then use more solvent. (we both use a Ballistol mixture, a 1 to 4 ratio. After a while he says it's still rough.

I ask him how long has it been since he first noticed it. He kind of shrug the question off, sorta implying that it's been there a while.

He shoots a T/C 50 cal Hawkens using 2f bp. What would you guys suggest?

I would get a bore light an see what's going on is what I would do. Sounds like someone left a load in it to long and it rusted an pitted the barrel at that point. Well, maybe not 4" up from the breech, unless someone short started it an just left it for awhile until they either shot it out or pulled it. Just guessing here :idunno:.

Maybe it was left loaded with a spit patch or something that caused rust in that spot?

If it is determined that there is indeed a rough spot in the barrel, I would suggest a bore mop with JB bore paste. Run that thru the bore several time over the rough spot, then clean thoroughly. If the pitting is not too bad, this usually works.

I'd pull the breech plug and give it a thorough checking out.
It could be a corrosion area, collapsed barrel seam or bulge from a short start. If the later it can usually be seen from the outside looking down the barrel in good light. Mike D.
