Some time back, in another place in these forums there was a short discussion of slings for muzzle loaders, don't remember where for sure.
There are a lot of vendors that sell slings for guns without swivels.
Some pretty nice looking and they varied a lot in cost.
I always kinda like a sling, handy to hang a gun off your shoulder or throw it over your back on a long walk when you aren't hunting but just covering ground.
it would be easy to mount a swivel post at the butt stock end, but the fore end is a problem, there just ain't enough meat up there, and then I'd only consider something like that on a plain jane production gun.
I wanted something easy to get off, for removing the barrel to clean.
So, I just made one of leather.
I had to buy a new saddle string because I didn't have anymore good ones left, cost me 5 bucks for one up at the general store we have here. For the strap I just got a piece of 1 1/4 inch wide strap off an old harness that wasn't much good anymore anyway, lacking that a cinch latigo striped down narrower or a inch or so belt blank would do.
Saddle strings are 5 feet long and 1/2 inch wide, they're skived down pretty thin because they need to be supple for tying things off and they're grain leather for the best strength.
Split one in half and you have 2 nice 5 foot thongs a 1/4 inch wide.
I punched 2 holes, cross ways, for the thong.
a simple clove hitch ties it off.
At the upper end one set of holes works.
At the butt end I left the strap a little long and can put in several sets of holes to change the sling length.
My stock has a cheek piece so the sling ties off good behind it and stays in place. Or tie it off at the wrist.
One guy said tying on a sling with thongs would interfere with the sights, saddle strings are thin, after tying off on the barrel, there's only about a 1/16th inch of leather over the barrel, knot's on the bottom, any sights ought to see over that.
If I can figure out how to make this photobucket thing work, I might try to post a picture later.
Anyway, it's a nice sling, should last forever, and cost was minimal.
