I'm Pasquinel and love everything flint. A good friend (who
I met thru Blackpowder research) has built me one very nice
Pennsylvania Longrifle :imo: with a second one in the works. What I'd like to know is if you can purchase a kit gun with built in off-set? I own GPR in 54 Cal. good gun, but when I mount it to shoot it takes me afew seconds to obtain a good sight picture! You know, making slight twists or what hove you until sights are lined up correctly. The
rifle Mark made for me has the sights on line/target from the instant it touches my shoulder, looking straight down the barrell! So is this what you guys refer to as off set and if so how do you obtain it? I asked this question before but here goes again. If I've never built a gun before is it possible to do an excellent job the first time if I proceed at a snails pace? Help!!

Offset is when you layout the barrel line to be inlet off center to the stock blank on top.
Find center of the stock and make you offset from that point.
You draw the line the barrle will lay with on top of the stock blank. To get the offset you desire you can make it 1/6 . 1/8 inch to the right or 1/4 inch.... although 1/4 inch in my opinion is a bit much.
You can make the offset either to the right side or left side of center. Depending on if you are makeing a R/H or L/H gun.

Length of pull and drop in the stock have a lot to do with it as well. A lot of guys that are tall with tall necks have to roll their head over the comb to get a sight picture. Keep in mind, those GPR are MASS produced as quickly and with as little effort as humanly possible in order to make the company profit. Therefore, those guns aremade to a common scale of what an "average" body size would be. Unfortunately, we all don't fit into an off the shelf description of "average".

Try mounting your GPR more on the upper arm muscle instead of the traditional shoulder mount. See if that helps everything come into alignment.

The term is "cast-off" or "cast-on". This is the distance the center of the top of the buttplate is off from the centerline as established by the barrel. Round-faced boys will need more cast-off than narrow-faced types. Generally when building a gun for someone for a perfect fit, they should try some guns with and w/o castoff to establish how much to offset the buttplate. Then the customer should mount the unfinished custom gun with eyes closed and see where the sights line up. The custom maker can shave more off the comb and cheekpiece till it fits like it was made for them (cause it was).
