I'm thinking about putting a patch box on a finished gun. My Virginia Smooth bore I built yr. before last. I want to take more weight off the gun and want to do a patch box anyway and would rather try one on it than my next build.
Is there any problems I may run into doing this to a finished gun?
Thanks for all info.
Also while I'm thinking about it..I want to make ramrods for it .20ga. and my .54cal. and use the wood end for a jag. Tapper them down..what size ramrods would work for a .20ga. and .54cal. rifled barrel?

The only real problem with installing a patchbox on a finished gun is the possibility of frinkling up the existing finish and having especially careful about getting the depth right.

I for one, have yet to bend and install a patchbox so precisely that it didn't need a little wood removed somewhere around it's perimeter to get it absolutely flush like it should be.

As long as you remember what you used to stain and finish the gun with you should beable to blend in any area that you might disturb.

Thanks for info..I may go ahead and install one..would rather screw up my first build attempt a little more that my next gun.
Anyone know what size hickory ramrod blank I should get for a .20ga. and .54cal. when using the end for a jag..tapered style. 1/2" or 7/16"? Thanks again for any info.
