G'day again ... been out and fired my Zoli 1841 Mississipi a couple of times with no huge mishaps, but now I'm faced with some fine tuning.

The rifle comes with a standard fixed V sight, and I have to aim above a one foot square at 100 yards to hit it, meaning I either lower the front blade, or fit a taller rear sight.

However, the rear sight fits in a simple dovetail, which not only makes for easy windage adjustment, but also easy removal.

Is there a rear sight available that will suit the period of the original firearm that is slide adjustable for range?

As far as I can tell, there was huge variation in the Mississipi rifles during their long time in service, especially during their use by both sides during the American Civil War.

Meanwhile, my rifle is essentially a civilian hunting weapon, but I would like to accessorise it in the spirit of its era.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know of one.

Another option might be to get a piece of 1/32 or 1/16 thick steel and cut off a small piece that is the same size as the blade on the rear sight.

Using a clear Extra Strength (slow curing) Epoxy you could bond this to the back of the existing sight.
After it's cured, file it down so it is a little over 1/16 taller than your existing sight.

I'm basing the 1/16 on a wild guess that your aiming about 8 inches high at 100 yards and the sights on your gun are about 18 inches apart.
For this combination of things, the actual increase in height calculates to be .040.
.070 would raise the point of impact at 100 yards about 14 inches.

After it's adjusted, you could apply some cold blue to finish it off and if you decided to remove it, applying some heat from a propane torch will cause it to fall off. :)

Zonie :)

Most "fixed sight" muzzle loaders are made with a taller front sight so you can file it down to bring your point of impact to where you want it. I'd just file down the front sight a little at a time until you regulate the POI to the load that you're using. I had a '41 a number of years ago and ended up putting a Zoave rear sight on it just to get a taller rear sight but looking back at it I should have just filed the front one down a bit. Good luck.
