I'm trying to get a rifle together so I can start ordering parts. I want a .62cal. and light as possible. I want it in swamped 38" C profile. Now here is where the problems come in..looks like a .62cal. is not offered in anything but D profile. Okwaho mentioned in a post about getting a .58cal. re-rifled to .62cal. by Ed Rayl. The biggest cal. I can find in 38" C profile is .54cal. Rice has a 42" C profile in .58cal..which might have to be an option...but what I'm thinking is if I'm going to buy a new barrel and pay at least $100 more to get it re-rifled..maybe I should get a less expensive barrel and have it done. I know very little about what I'm talking about..is a C profile big enough for a .62cal...can I have one special ordered for about the same? Just trying to get some info. so I know which way I can go with this. I see now I need to get the ball rolling way ahead of time to keep from waiting on parts for a build.
Thanks for any info.

I understand what you are saying but a .62 cal in a real light rifle is going to beat the crap out of you. A 37" D weight barrel in .62 cal. is only 4.5# and a 54 cal 38" barrel in C weight is 4.2# so we are talking .30# dif in weight or baxically 1/4 of a pound. You will not know the difference & the extra 1/4 of a pound is well worth having in a .62 cal. I would opt with the 37" D weight barrel or possibly LC can make you a 38" D weight.

They don't offer it in a "C" weight as the waist of the swamp is considered too thin with the .62 bore.

I will give some of the barrel makers a call..after friendship is over. I'm more or less trying to get enough info to know what questions to ask..etc.
I thought the difference in weight from D to C was more...Birddog do you think the .62cal. Edward Marshall 37" D profile barrel would work in one of those Bucks Co. stocks like Tip carries? He's supposed to be sending me his price list etc.

Many years ago, I built a .62 rifle, specifically for elk hunting. I kept the weight down to around 7.75 pounds. The barrel was a Montana Rifle Barrel Co., now Orion Barrels, 1-72 twist. It was very accurate.

But...

To get the best accuracy from the barrel, I had to shoot 170 gr. 2F. And it killed at both ends.

No, you are not going to find that Bucks in that barrel weight as the gun would not look right. That Bucks is a long slender rifle & a D weight barrel in 37-38" would not work be appropriate. His pattern is for a A & B weight swamped barrels I am almost sure. Don't even think it comse in a C weight in that particular pattern.

Tip is at Friendship this week & will probably be back next Mon. or Tues. after it is all over.

The thing to do is to ask him what stocks he has that will take a .62 cal barrel if that is the caliber you want, rather than pick a style & then try to make the barrel fit. The stock patterns are set up for the size of barrels that are appropriate for that style of rifle, rather than for what someone may want to try to put in it. I suggest you stay with a 1-56 or 1-66 twist or you will have to load it heavy to make it shoot accurately & we get into a recoil thing on that, unless is is strictly a hunting rifle. If it is used for target & reqires large charges it will most likely stay in the gun safe soon after the new wears off, from what I have seen allot of guys do.

Altho I do like a .62 caliber & have one, you should consider the balls for a .62 cal are roughly $16. a hundred. That is expensive target shooting. Balls for a .58 caliber are $9-10 a hundred and the .54 balls are $8. a hundred, so when you get past a .58 caliber the shooting cost doubles per shot. :hmm:
If you are going to shoot allot of target, I suggest a .58 or a .54 simply because of the cost of shooting them compared to the .62, unless you just have to have a large bore........ and I know how those wants are.........been there done that...... ::

Well..crap. That blows a hole in what I had planned. I wanted to use that stock on a .62cal. & .58cal. I had asked him about it in an email..but he had Friendship on his mind and was just telling me all the stuff he was taking.....etc.
I was considering using that stock on the .54cal. 38" C profile Rice I got coming from Pecatonica..and maybe use their Andrew Verner on something else...But again..I can't get any info. because of Friendship. If I knew Tip's stock would work (which you just said it probably won't) on a 38" C..I would tell Dick not to inlet the Verner stock for a C profile..because the only C profile I would want to put in it would be a .54cal.

I already got a .62 smooth rifle and do a lot of casting plus not much shooting..so it won't be too bad.

Oh well..I need to do as you say..
The thing to do is to ask him what stocks he has that will take a .62 cal barrel if that is the caliber you want,

I also want a .58cal., .40cal., .45cal., .36cal. and then fill in the gaps. I started this addiction too late in life..and even with that..have a small window..due to circumstances and hunting seasons.. to try and get at least a few of these built...and as everybody has said..This is not something to hurry. I'm not so much hurrying as I am sitting on my hands.
Thanks for all the help and information..I would look at the RCA book I ordered from TOW..but don't know if it will ever get here..invoiced on the 6th. shipped out the 8th. arrival time 14th. They must be stopping by Friendship too.

I suggest a Jaeger in the D weight barrel in 37" on a .58 or a .62 cal. Wonderful balance & handles the recoil really well with the balance & wide buttplate. Awesome deer hunting rifle too......... Also great in a 31" barrel length....... Since you are going to get several different style & caliber rifles, you need to round if off with a nice Jaeger !

:imo:

What I'm hoping for right now is that Buck's Co. stock of Tip's will accommodate a C profile..if so I will go with a .58cal. 42" C from Rice and just put the .62cal. on hold. I do like the Jaeger and Edward Marshal also.
The stock I'm getting from Pecatonica has to be cut a little big to accommodate C profile..maybe that will be a possibility with Tip's.
