Gents was wondering if anyone might have any links to pictures of the african game bigbores from 8 bore and larger. Preferably 4 bore percussion doubles. Modern reps or originals. Thanks for any help.
Regards,
Karl.

Here is a photo I posted here some time ago.

Underhammer1.jpg

Here is the post Elephant hunting with an Underhammer.

420 grains of FFFG and 1400 grain balls !
That fella must have a shoulder like an elephant.
Smokey. :shocked2:

Hey Smokey! That would be a GREAT wallaby gun. Just about enough I reckon. Enough to miss either side by 6 feet and STILL have the concussion to kill the roo........ :rotf:

gmww,
That's the sort of thing I am after.Don't suppose you know of any copies of the article as well?

Karl.

I'm sorry friend. I got that from another forum and it was more of look at this photo post. There are a couple of posters here who like large bore guns.

I believe BS is one of them.

GMWW, how big was that wedding pressent that guy got on the perc site 3 or 4 months back thats what hes looking for, cant remember the name of the posting "new rifle" or?? look at anything I said something about on perc back then it'll show up think it was a 1 of a kind, they were in South Africa and the gun was waiting at home in Canada I think. Ring a bell anyone?? fred :hatsoff:

roflmao, wallaby, roo, possums in tree nearby and the farmers old fergy tractor!
Wonder if the elephant stopped the ball?

gmmw that is a big gun! What calibre is it? It looks larger even than 4 bore/ 1" to me. Maybe 3 or even 2 bore at 1.35" or so bore.

Karl.

If you click on the link just above the photo, it will bring you to the thread discussing this photo. It's not mine. I just borrowed the photo. There are more of this huge gun.

I remember seeing a show on the History Channel about safari guns. It said that there would be a team of indigineous persons whose only job was to carry the gun and hold it while the hunter pulled the trigger. I love these guns, anyone have some more pictures?

Yes a lot of the safari pros and gentleman hunters used gun bearers in the muzzloading and breechloading blackpowder days of the 1800's when 4 bores weighed up to 30lbs.Even into the second great african hunting era of smokeless, going from about 1890 into the first couple decades of the 20th century they were still common, though gun weight had halved by then.

Karl.

Oh you said hold the gun while the hunter actually fires it. I have not heard of this before. Closest I have read is Samuel Baker in the 1860's using his 1/2 pound explosive shell muzzloader and resting it one natives to fire it.

I know most of them got the gun bearers to carry and swap the guns for them during firing sequences until relatively recently.

Karl.

W'all thars one thing fer darn shore .. that gun would seperate tha boys from the mens ... quick, fast, and ina danged hurry! :hmm:
