I went to the woods after leaving the house,
but not a creature was stirring, not even a grouse;

When the raindrops fell it was cloudy and cool,
But I was all dry, mama didn’t raise no fool;

I hunted ”˜til dark just hoping for a buck,
but like recent days I had no good luck;

I hiked to the truck and loaded my gear,
Then across right in front of me ran 9 big ole deer !!!!

:shake:

I went out this morning. It was snowing with a north wind at about ten to fifteen miles per hour. I keep a small thermometer/compass on my florescent orange day pack. The instrument registered 15 F. Combine that with the windchill and it made for an interesting day.

I did learn a bit about why I have been having poor success. I found four sets of deer tracks during my forays. I figured that the deer had changed their habits. One group became very nocturnal as the tracks were rather fresh. I figured that they were moving around at 4 to 5 AM. Well before legal shooting light. They headed towards safety and never crossed the dirt road as they have last year.

The other set indicated that the deer moved a good half mile into the deep woods and were living between two swampy areas. With the excessive rains two weeks ago these areas flooded significantly and now the deer are avoiding them. Sure. Guess where I have three treestands?

Tommorrow will be spent doing some in season scouting as we can't hunt on Sunday anyways. I will move one or maybe two of my stands to better intercept the deer.

Sure sounds like hunting to me!

Also sounds like you're on the right track. In-season scouting produces a lot more deer for me than preseason scouting.

I could have by now filled all of my tags,
But 'tis a big, pretty rack I'm wanting to bag;

Food is all gone, they've gone elsewhere to eat,
And finding one now has become a real feat;

I might change my focus, try to change my fate,
And go after some squirrels before its too late;

But squirrels are scarce too 'cause they gotta eat,
So maybe its time to just shoot Flintlock skeet;

:grin:

:applause: But, Clearly you read to much Dr. Suess :grin:

I thought you quit smoking years ago? Or was it just tobacco? :wink:

I used to hunt a spot so productive it was called "the meatlocker". Then a little bit of logging was done nearby --not much, selective, with horses--. The pattern of movement changed completely and I never shot another deer there. Don't take much,really. Good smoke, Ron
