How do you anneal German silver trigger gaurd? Is it the same to anneal as brass?

Thank you
Olie

When I built my last pistol, I used a German Silver casting for the trigger guard.

Being German Silver, I thought that I would anneal it just like I do when working with brass so I heated it cherry red and quenched it.
When I started to bend it to fit the grip, it broke!

Several weeks later with a new guard in hand I decided to anneal it like I would if it was steel so I heated it cherry red and then I very slowly cooled it.
It bent like butter!

Bottom line? You never know until you try it.

zonie :)

How about playing with a piece of the one that broke - let it cool slowly and see if it recovers? 'Twould be nice to know if it's technique or metal quality control that's the issue.

I heat to cherry red and let air cool. Possibly dunking a TG in water might cause or worsen an existing crack because of the rapid cool down. I don't anneal brass TGs and haven't had one break, although a steel TG broke because of a large void at a juncture. If a brass or German silver inlay has to be bent or contoured, I do anneal....Fred
