Has anyone on the forum ever used a patch with conicals? As conicals come into direct contact with rifling and could cause lead build up, why not use a patch with an undersized bullet?

I've even used teflon tape instead of paper with some good results. Sometime not so good.

If the conical is properly undersize you can paper patch it, or even use other substances. A cloth patch generally is not practical with a conical. You are much better off using a proper sized conical with a base wad, or OP wad to seal the bore behind the conical and the protect the base and sides from gas cutting. If a conical has a hollow base, it should be made from pure lead, so that the skirt expands to fill the grooves properly. And you do have to use an good lube with those conicals.

I asked a similiar question a couple of weeks back and got some great responses. If you have a look at "posts by Jarikeen" you should find it.
I love shooting PRB at rondy, but now want to experiment. I will be looking at using a 40 S&W pistol mould (175grains) in my .40 cal just for fun.

A whole lot is going to depend on the diameter of the bullet as-cast versus the bore size. As with patching an RB, you're going to need to adjust patch thickness to bring about the right relationship between the two.

I've not tried in a ML, but have shot paper patched pure lead bullets quite a bit in my BP cartridge rifle (50-140). Results were so-so, probably due to faults in my patching technique and a little difficulty I encountered in getting patch thickness to come out just right with the paper I was using. I had outstanding results with paperpatch bullets made by a friend, and would probably use the same methods he did if I pursued it further. After patching his bullets, he pushed them through a sizing die to smooth and true things up. I have no clue whether that would make a difference patching a conical for a ML, but it sure brought out the best in my Sharpes.
