I want to put a turned spout on a horn I am making. I want it to screw on the horn. Question: What kind of thread is used, Wood threads or just National coarse? If wood threads, where do I get the taps and die for this type thread (cheap). Also how did the old timers make or get the tools to do this job? Len

I guess the simplist way without going into volumes of instructions, is for you to buy of borrow a copy of BOOK OF BUCKSKINNING II.

David Wright has an excellent chapter on basic Horn making and goes into making a screw end spout.

Track of the Wolf has the BOB series, as do other M/L suppliers.

Hi Len....Try using a 5/8" NC thread for the average size horn. If you can locate an adjustable 5/8" tap through a machinist supply, you'll be better off. Start your threads with the tap fully loosened to get the threads started. Once established, you can gradually tighten up the die and continue threading until you feel you have a good fit with the female threads. Unfortunately, cowhorn tends to chip out easily if you use a fixed die for threading. Trying to remove too much in one pass will only ruin the threads. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks guys I looked through Buckskinning II and Silby's book and got a lot of info. I also looked through my tap and dye sets and the largest I had was a 1/2 X13. So I went that way. I used a brass pipe and threaded it end to end. put female threads on the spout and female on the horn. Used the pipe like a close nipple. Not very authentic but unless you take off the spout you can't see anything different. For my next horn I will get the 5/8 taps and die (adjustable). Thanks for the info. Len

Maybe you can post some pics? Everybody likes pics.

I will try to get my son to get pix on to you. I am too computer illiterate to do it myself. Len

Len I'll see if No.4 shot can help you out. He's my son and a master at this horn making stuff.

Len nice horn is that the one you had out to the club? Nice gun also I would like to look at the carveing and get some tips from you. But the horn you are also on the Masters list.

Thanks Sluggun. yes that is the horn I had out to the club. The gun is my latest build I should have that out to league shoot.

That horn is super. I've been piddling with some using threaded wooden pieces but they don't come anywhere close to that kind of quality.

Nice job on the horns! Did you do any dying on the spout and if so, what color did you use (if you used Rit or something like that). I am trying to finish one that has only some brown on the tip, like that, and I like the color you came up with.
:applause:

No I didn't do any staining/dying on the horn. I Guess I got lucky, the cow did all the work. I was all ready to dye it after reading several of the books forum guys suggested, and got to looking at the color and decided to just leave it the way it is. You can't see in the pix, the color is a dark chocolate. I am starting on another one, and don't think it will change color as I carve, so will have to stain. Let me know how you make out on your coloring. I still might do some scrimshaw. am trying to decide what to scratch into it. I am torn between kitties or butterflys. Len

I wasn't going to say anything, but since you did.........KITTIES or BUTTERFLYS??? I was starting to think I was overaggressive by considering an eagle.
:shocked2:

Just wanted to see if you guys were paying attention. So what do ya think "bunnies"?
Actually a friend loaned me a 1755 map Of The North west territories including the Great lakes and the native tribe locations and names. It looks to be a French map. I was thinking about scratching that in as a war map. Len

It would probably look great hanging off your neck as you wore your late 1800's persona gear to the next rondy! :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:
:shake: :youcrazy: Do you suppose the PC Nazi's would notice?

I was thinking about using the Mattel logo but was worried about copyright laws. my friend told me to use the Red Wings logo. If the PC nazis ask I'll tell them the horn was the one my great great--- Gran pap used during the crusades.

If you make the story really unbelievable, the PC Nazi's will go blank instead of showing their stupidity of not knowing.
