I liked my larger 10 inch Nessmuk so much that I decided to forge a smaller one as a belt knife. 8 & 1/2 inch Nessmuk from 5160 carbon steel, blade is thin & sharp, and tang is drilled for a handle of either split antler or some nice wood. Wrapped a Para Cord handle so I could try it out first. Only thing difference from an original Nessmuk is the indent to protect your finger from the sharp blade...tippit

Somehow, I just can't envision a person living prior to the end of the Civil War carrying a knife that looked even remotely like that.

This whole forum is based on the idea of traditional things used prior to that time.

The knife was designed around 1840. If I am posting the wrong ideas here, I'm sorry about the para cord but I explained I was trying the knife before adding a handle of antler or wood. I'll stop posting.

Nice knife tippit ditch the para cord put some antler slabs on it and all will be happy, I personally like the nessmuck knives they are work horses that a person can depend on.

I apologize for my comment about your knife. I guess I was just over-reacting to the bright orange nylon cord where a handle should be.
I'm sure you will add a nice handle, making it look like an authentic knife later, if you haven't already done that. When you do, we would like to see it so, please post some pictures in this thread to let us see how it turned out.

In the meantime, I'm not going to delete this thread.
