I finally finished my daughter's F&I style powder horn the other day. Sarah likes dragons and wanted a dragon motif on the horn. The artwork is hers, I did the majority of the scrimshaw (she started it and discovered that it is harder than it looks). The horn features an Asian Lindworm dragon (don't ask me, that's what she says it is) winding around the horn. The incription winding around with the dragon says: "If Ye Be Friend, Enter My Lair. If Ye Be Foe, Then Do Not Dare!" The butt plug is a piece of maple stained with LMF Lancaster Maple. It has an square iron staple for the strap. The spout plug is a piece of Smoke tree wood. The strap is braded hemp. I stained the horn per Sibley's book with Rit dye, using two packages of orange, one package of yellow and maybe a quarter package of black. I originally was looking for a more orange finish, but both of us are please with the result. The horn received favorable comments at yesterday's club shoot. Here are pics of the horn.

Next on the list is to finish my F&I horn...

:hatsoff: Nice job!.......... Be careful horn making can be additive

You're right about it being addictive, Soggy. It's just plain fun to turn out these things. And some day I might even get good at it.

Actually the phrase I modified a bit from one I found in a Dragonology book Sarah has. It was the end of a long poem, and I changed the wording to put it in the 18th century and fit the F&I period. It was fun...

That is a nice looking horn !

If I may suggest something, dye the strap darker so you see the horn & are not distracted by the light colored hemp strap. This keeps the horn as the focal point.

Nice color on the horn & looks well made.

Thanks Birddog6, that's a good suggestion. Actually, though, the hemp straps are temporary. I plan to weave some good straps for all our horns, just haven't got to it yet...

Hey Ken! I used Rit dye for all the staining per Sibley's book. Colors were brown with a bit of black. The dye worked real well, but scraping the horn after staining was a bit of work though :)

I had the same problem scraping the black dye off the horn. So in the next ones I made I taped the portion that I did not want to be stained tightly with electrical tape.
I worked very good. Try it next time.

Wish I could have got a decent picture of the artwork. It was difficult with the way the dragon wraps around the horn. My daughter is a pretty good artist, and her work lends itself nicely to scrimshaw. I tried to do her work justice with the knife, but....

IIRC...
I had to do 1 1/2 turns to see the dragon and read the verse when it was in my hands last weekend. It is a nice horn!
as well as the one you made for Pat.
Fine work.

Now I have to finish my big F&I horn, and then think of what to scrimshaw on it. :hmm:
I want to do some sort of map, but am undecided what exactly. Probably will do an early map of the area around here, but of course that wouldn't be PC :rotf:
