Sorry I did not get back to you before the thread was closed but here is your answer to what I thought was a very interesting but concerning question
A 3/8" drill bit is exactly the .36 bore ..infact the bit I used to test out question had to have the area around the "3/8""
that was stamped in the shank to be polished before the shank would slide in past the imprint ..
YES there is either a step or beginning of a taper ...not that you can see it ..but was found by this drill bit shank ..
The the bit shank will only go in about 1/2" and stops at the same point in each chamber ..
The two pictures are self explanatory as you see the first picture is bit inserted and marked in BLUE and the second shows the shank overlay the cylinder which indicates the chamber begins it's taper well before the rebated area of concern ..
Additionally ...I would thank today's metallurgy would have to be superior to that of the time period this model was designed ..
Therefore I have no reluctance at all about this design and manufacture being a safe BLACK POWDER firearm which I hope to shoot the bluing plum off of it!

Thanks Bear, I could not actually see the taper or diameter reduction as one can in the 60 Colt chambers. I did the same test yesterday with a plug gauge and it to stopped just about where your drill shank does. I guess I was expecting the 62 chambers to have the same profile as my 60 Colt and got to wondering if someone had been in there with a reamer before I bought the gun used. She was in pretty rough shape when I acquired her and would not even fully cycle all chambers.
