Thinning the herd. I bought this rifle about 15yrs ago and never shot it. I'm not exactly sure what it is but I think it is a later restock.
This beautiful rifle is very nicely built with a slim and well proportioned dark walnut half-stock. There is a slight crack culminating in a small chip at the bottom rear of the lock mortice, but easily fixed. Brass hardware with engraving throughout, including a patchbox and 3 inlaid stars on the cheekpiece with checkering on the wrist and forearm. All inlays and checkering is well done. The rifle weighs 7.8 lbs.
Barrel is 33" long and 7/8" across the flats. The bore measures 3/8" at the muzzle and there are some old linen? patches in the patchbox with the top one marked 37. Bluing is mostly gone but has a nice patina. Barrel is held in place with 2 screws in long fixed tang as well as a threaded screw instead of a pin through the ecrusteouns? Barrel rib is soldered in place and the underside of the barrel has an unused dovetail and a couple filled holes suggesting a restocking or new build from old parts.
The sights are very unique. The long rear sight pivots on a center screw while a beavertail piece on the front of the sight loosens or tightens the sight in place. There is a witness mark along the center line of the barrel, presumably to return the sight to zero. The front sight is overly broad and appears to have some sort of faux- ivory for a blade.
Percussion lock is engraved with a hunting dog scene. Cant read the name in the scroll but I think it is a Goulcher lock. Lock needs work as it wont engage in half or full cock. Double set triggers appear to function fine.
With a little work, this fine rifle can be turned back into a functional squirrel rifle or left as is as a beautiful wall hanger, but that would be a shame.
