Just curious, the outfit I shoot with has thier range up in the hills...level ground just does not exist here. So, they use rifle stands made out of steel usually...sort of like a tall skinney pole with curved cross bars. Well, I am making one out of a branch that was cut off a tree some time back. For the bars to hold the rifle upright I am thinking of affixing a set of antlers still attached to part of the skull plate instead. My question is.....how secure are those antlers attached? Or, would I be better off sawing them off the plate and attaching them to the branch with screws and covering with leather wrap?

Thanking those who reply in advance,
Curt

I have used antlers-skulls to hang guns with no problems, as long as the animal died before the shedding prosess started they should be firmly affixed to the skull.

TG nailed it.

To amplify what tg said, yeah the antlers are attached pretty darn good. The weak point on the skull plate is the seam down the middle where the two halves join to together. Not that it's all that weak, but if somethings gonna come apart, its gonna come apart there.

oomcurt,
I agree with tg but rather than nail i would
suggest to drill and screw the skull cap rather than
nail IMHO and very carefully, then all should last
you for quite awhile.
snake-eyes :results:
