I've got two so far, "The Techniques of North American Indian Beadwork" by Monte Smith and "Crow Indian Beadwork" by William Wildschut and John Ewers. I think this and stamping would be my preferred methods of dressing up leatherwork. Floral carving may require a little too much artistic license for me.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've added those to my wishlist. Got some new projects in mind and a new Dragoon to make a holster for. Wish me luck!

Looks like you've got the how-to part covered so the next thing I would ask is are you interested in doing pre-1850 style beadwork or the later stuff or both?
If pre-1850 then the resources become more limited and the styles are in general different than the later stuff and much of the work will also be done with pound beads (8/o size beads) although there was a also usage of seed beads - yes seed beads were available and used prior to the 1850's despite what so many books state - even those that should know better. Colors were also much more limited pre-1850's.

Anyway let me know and I can offer some resources for pre-1850 western beadwork.

Any book by W. Ben Hunt. Especially his book on Indian Crafts and Lore. Has a nice simple break down of beading.

That's one of the things I have to figure out. Perhaps both but I need to do a bunch of reading to get my brain better wrapped around it. Lots of homework to do. I've been admiring your work ever since seeing it in John Taffin's writings and would be lying if I said it didn't inspire me to try my hand at it. Thanks! :hatsoff:

I have to second your opinion......LaBonte's work is a great place to get inspiration. I am just fascinated by what he turns out.

The Complete Guide to Traditional Native American Beadwork: A Definitive Study of Authentic Tools, Materials, Techniques, and Styles by Joel Monture (ISBN 0-02-066430-3 - Collier Books, NY))

New books started trickling in this afternoon. Have to say these are much better than the two I already had. Alex Kozlov's book on knife sheaths looks to be particularly good. As I was also wanting to do beaded knife sheaths for my knives from ML Knives. Thanks again folks! :hatsoff:
