lookin at a possible hog hunt in texas later this winter, never done it, dont know anything about it, any ML'ers out there ever killed a hog w' a ML? I am definetly either goin trad ML, or trad Bow.
thanks Scott

I have'nt shot one yet , but my brother has some on his land that I plan on shooting. I figure a .490 prb with 70 grns of 3fff will do the job.

Stalk close, Shoot it in the ear hole, and drag it out. Then try to find somebody else to clean the stinking critter for ya!
Armakiller your load should be more than enough, Good luck.

havent been but id like too. maby sometime in 2013 ill make a trip.

I have yet to kill one with my muzzleloader but have taken 18 with Recurves and longbows. If trad bowhunting them look for a good angling away shot mid body forward and center body and below. A good sharp two blade will get through the sheild but not through shoulder so keep shots back from that. One thing I have found in guiding for hogs also is if the first shot is good they will go down quickly. IF a poor shot is made you have one of the hardest critters on the face of this earth to kill!!!!! Put in a good shot and sit back and give him 30 min. or so, they usualy will not go far. The vitals on a hog sit more behind the shoulders than deer and slightly lower but YES you can shoot under the vitals so look to keep shots near center body.

I know you have your mind set on Texas. We make a weeklong trip to hunt the hogs on ft. benning, ga every year. I was stationed there for three years and there are so many hogs they were paying a $40 bounty to kill one. Was a side business while there. I know all the swamps down there, and the training areas like the back of my hand. Its just as hot as Texas as well. Hunted most with a 7mm rem mag. due to it being about business and profitting from killing them. But many have died at the hands of the mighty 54 cal flinter dubbed the "Bacon Maker". For the record the hogs aren't as tough and bullet proof as people make out. Shoot them high in the shoulder and you will break the shoulder and usually the spine they only go about 1 ft to the ground a squeeeeelll and thats it. Now the big one 300 and up can soak up some lead from time to time, but never needed more then two shots ever. Also never been charged either truth be known the hogs have poor eyesight walk with the wind in your face and follow the rooting marks and you will smell them long before you see them. Most shots were around 15-40 yards. If interested let me know when we figure out the next time we go I will let you know. It will be summer time though since its tougher for non-military guys to get to hunt during deer season there. Plus the summer time they are in the swamps or creek beds easier to find them.

I have read about people hunting them on Fort Stewart also. I took a 148lb sow with my recurve bow on a hunt with an outfitter in middle GA. The sow only went about 40 yards after my 2 blade Badger broadhead went through the vitals.

I thought that Benning was Military, dependents and retired military only now? I could be getting it mixed up with another place now though.

What Little John said is true though. There are some great places other than TX to go chase pigs at. Ga has an abundance of public land with an abundance of pigs.

I must retrack my last statment   There are no pigs on Fort Stewart

My last one was taken with a .22LR pistol with a 4.5" barrel at about 40yds, and weighed between 175-200LBS. Now that was a shot of opportunity and not a hunt or I would have had my FL with me instead, but the .22 cal 36gr HP went in right at the right elbow, through both lungs, and out just behind the offside elbow, and all that with a bullet that never goes supersonic out of this gun. The hog made it about 10 feet before collapsing. I'm not saying that I recommend a marginal/small caliber, but just putting this out as my way of saying that any reasonable deer load is plenty of power, so use what you're comfortable with and make sure your shot placement is good as that is what counts the most in the end.

I killed 2 hogs in Texas last November with a 50 cal flintlock and PRB.

It was a blast!

No thats a common myth my dad came and hunted with me many times. You can bring guest into hunt but they must be in the same area as you are in. And you are responsible for them as well. Each licensed military, dependant, or retired vet can bring one guest in at a time. So to bring numerous non-military guys you need more military friends. Either way civilians can hunt there just escorted. Ft knox is the same way except civilians can get drawn to hunt there on designated weekends without military escorts. Each post has different rules and can be read online.. And Ft. Stewart has a huge pig population you guys are fibbers..

I understand that check with him and see if you can hunt on base. Military bases have the best public land access I have ever hunted. Just make sure you have a hunters safety card present or else the wont let ya hunt.
